You certainly can leave the Estring in during sex, my husband and I didn't have any problems. You can take it out if you want before sex and put it back afterward but there really isn't any need.
There is now a contraceptive 'Ring' as well which is the same as the Estring only contains the hormones to prevent pregnancy - my daughter uses this 'Ring' and doesn't find sex a problem with it in.

Thanks  for all your replies ladies. I have just been doing some more reading about the estring and I'm thinking that because the cap ( similar to estring ) used to give me BV I have a feeling the estring may do the same. My body doesn't seem to like things left inside so to speak 😮.

I'm thinking the way forward may be to try vagifem first and if no luck then maybe the estring.

well, you've got options which is good. If you think BV might be a problem (and if I remember rightly you had to use a spermicidal cream with the cap which might have altered your vaginal flora and maybe led to the BV in itself) you could always try the Actigel stuff with the Estring if you wanted. Just a thought. I used both kinds of cap, I remember - the dutch ones were a bit of a fiddle....
Good luck!

This is my very first post on this site and forum. I've been peri-menopausal/menopausal for a good few years now. During that time I still had monthly periods January 2012 was my last period. I've suffered hot flashes and flushes and still do, but that seemed to be all I got.

I got a bad fungal infection three weeks after being on high dosage of two different antibiotics and oral steroids while in hospital for a lung condition. I also had heavy spotting. My GP prescribed the usual anti-fungal pessiaries and creams but they didn't really help. I was referred to a gynaecologist consultant at the hospital after an examination she told me I had vaginal atrophy and was dry and so prescribed Vagifem (Estradiol) 10 micrograms vaginal tablets. 1 tablet at night for two weeks then 1 tablet twice a week.
This is my first week of twice a week and have used 1 tablet already. I was getting some headaches and abdominal discomfort but now I also have aching joints and pains and a general feeling of malaise.

I have read the posts on this topic and found them very informative, and am looking for any advice on the side effects. I am seeing my GP next Thursday to discuss it and any other options.

Please excuse the ramblings as I'm trying to make this post as understandable as possible.

Hi and welcome to MM Chriselora
I got a some cramps when I first used Vagifem that it quickly settles.  As so little oestrogen is absorbed systemically with local oestrogen it is highly unlikely that the Vagifem will be making you feel poorly.  I suspect you are still recovering from all the antibiotics and infection that you had - it can take up to 3-6 months to recover from all these infections and treatments. Aches and pains could be down to low oestrogen so perhaps consider trying some low dose systemic HRT? DG x

Thank you for welcoming me and replying Dancinggirl. Sometimes when I'm feeling poorly, I find it hard to decide what side effect goes with what condition.
You're right about the antibiotics, they do cause a lot of problems which can be worse than the condition they were originally prescribed for.
I've an appointment with my GP next week and will definitely discuss it with her.
Thank you again. :)

Hi ladies

Just update on my situation . Ok so went to doctor today ... Trainee one .... Who was very good and actually got main doctor involved who was very understanding .... Unfortunately did involve an internal  😒 but she has prescribed me vagisan to try and definately said could do with it. So I have to use one tablet every night for 2 weeks and then 2/3 times a week. So just tried my first one and will keep you updated to see whether they help and if any side effects.

She said HRT was something to think about but if I was considering it that I should start it sooner rather than later.  But also said that could only use it for 5 years and that they were having to counsel some ladies to ween them off it ... Lol 😳😳😳😳. Is it really that good ????

I am luck enough to have a "keen" hubby who is willing to take his time so as not to cause pain. Also we have found a great waterbased lube......

It's great to experiment with different products and different ways. As you go further into meno you may find it more difficult as even a keen hubby taking his time might not be enough but there are always the topical oestrogens which can really help keep both the vagina and pelvic floor in better condition.

LellyM is that the Yes water based?  We found that was quite good but water and oil based together didn't dry out so much  ::)
