New To MM
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:36:12 AM »

Hello everyone.
I am hoping for some advise - I am 49 (very nearly 50) and recently started getting anxiety attacks mainly during the night that seem to coincide with hot flushes. I saw by GP who started me on anti-depressants (big mistake) that put me into a perpetual state of panic. I stopped taking after a week. Is HRT the answer? I have a mirena coil. Looking for answers please....

:welcomemm:  some ADs can help with meno symptoms.  How is your diet generally?

Yes the GP said that a/d can help with some symptoms such as hot flushes but the side effects were too severe to continue. My diet is ok but I'm sure could be greatly improved. Any suggestions?

Hi aseamark
      :welcomemm:

I have mirena too and also use sandrena gel for the estrogen part.
I'm due to have a new mirena next wk after just over 3 yrs because it is starting to run out.
Been very good on both until this recent blip.

Dyan. How did you know that your mirena had run out? Thought they lasted 5 years ?

Susan. Thanks for your detailed reply. My mirena is due to be changed in May 2013, would you advise getting this done now to get the best from it? Also my FSH result was 40.7. What does this mean? Have I gone through the worst without realising it?
My GP said I would still need a combined HRT as I still have a womb...

aseamark - I started to get spotting each month 4 months ago and this month I had a full blown period.
I saw my GP 2 months ago and she checked to see if the mirena had fallen out but it was ok.
Her explanation was that some women can experience this after 3 years( if you are using the mirena for menopause which I am then it has to be changed after 4 yrs - 5yrs if using for contraception.
I've been getting headaches, cramping, cravings, feeling like I'm going to bleed any minute.
My lower stomach is very bloated and feels very uncomfortable.
I just don't feel right at all.
Saw GP last wk and she said it would be best if I had it replaced as the symptoms I have are showing that the mirena is running out.

Hope this helps aseamark

Dyan X :)

Hi aseamark
 :welcomemm:
I'd say that the best idea would be to have a new Mirena fitted and then add in some estrogen, as Susan has suggested. I had horrible adrenaline surges, mostly during the night and they went with HRT; I started it nearly 3 years ago at 49.

Thank you all for your kind replies. Bette I think I will do just that. I originally had the Mirena for contraception but as previously said it has obviously acted as a form of HRT so maybe it has 'worn out' as over 4 years old now. Maybe that would explain the sudden surge of adrenaline, especially at night. Do I ask for a low dose to start with or is this standard? I am looking forward to feeling 'me' again. Thank you. Xx

It is usual to start with a low dose and then work up if you don't get enough symptom relief. They usually suggest trying each type/dose for 3 months but it's usual to see some improvement much sooner than that.
It's likely that your hormones are fluctuating now that you're menopausal and you really need estrogen to help with symptoms as your own levels drop. The prog. in the Mirena may well help with some things but hot flushes are usually caused by lack of estrogen. The prog. is important to protect your womb, though, so you definitely can't have est. without prog. This section of the menu explains it better  ::) :-

I had side-effects when I tried a BB but none at all from HRT, so try not to worry, aseamark. We are all so different with these things. Most HRT side-effects seem to be caused by prog. anyway and as you already know that the Mirena suits you, that won't be a problem in your case.  ;)
