Cold/sinus or allergy?

(1/3) > >>

grumpy2008:
I've had mild hayfever this past few years, usually in the Spring, but this year has been especially bad. And the past week I've had the post-nasal drip, scratchy/itchy throat, sore eyes in the morning etc. Well I gave in last night and took an anti histamine (I hate taking tablets!) and felt some relief. But then I had an awful night and have woken with my sinus completely swollen, blocked ears and can barely talk.... in some ways it feels like a really bad head cold.... but is it?!

To those who suffer with hayfever, how do you tell the difference between a cold and an allergy reaction? I'm really confused! I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens, but I'm not sure whether to take more antihistamine, since it seemed to make me worse?

cubagirl:
Oh that's a hard one.  Pollens affect my asthma more than anything else.  But as you were feeling rough after taking the antihistamine, sounds more like a cold to me.

grumpy2008:
Ack, maybe it is a virus then  :(. And I guess there's no reason why I might not have both at the same time.

I work in a school and have a pretty good immune system so managed to avoid all the nasties flying around... or at least, I thought I had!!!

Feeling a bit better and less congested now - mornings/evenings are the worst.

CLKD:
I know exactly the difference.  I have allergic rhinitis 24/7.  Beconase nasal spray helps.  But only if I remember to take it which I don't on my 'weller' days, also using it too often dries up my nose/throat so I cough and gag  :-X

My AR is thus: the area under my bottom lip itches like crazy.  My throat is dry and itchy but the worst is the itchyness on the roof of my mouth which I am continually scratching with my tongue.  Plus the itchy eyes and that bit of the nose by the eye which itches inside and I can't REACH IT  :-X to scratch.  I use copiuos amounts and must keep Kleenex in business soley and utterly with my symptoms  ::) {have you ever met anyone who works for Kleenex? }

When I have a cold I get an itchy left arm 3-4 days prior to symptoms coming out: in the area where the BCJ injection went into: I feel sick, nauseous, get a dry mouth/throat runny nose/eyes. Can't eat or eat lots because my body is fighting a bug.   For me it's totally different.

When I had repeated sinus infections in the 1970s it felt like I was hung over without having taken drink  >:( - when I bent forwards the PAIN  :o :'(

grumpy2008:
Thanks CLKD. I had a mix of the symptoms  ::). The roof of my mouth was, and still is, itching like crazy which I put down to allergy. Hence my confusion! I've had little sleep the past 2 nights but hopefully over the worst now and should feel much better tomorrow!

There have been some strange bugs going around....
