Lightening strike
Bette:
Such excitement!
On Thurs afternoon, OH discovered that the tv etc weren't working properly. (We'll gloss over the fact that his first response was to ask if I'd done somthing to them! ::) ) It's quite a complicated set-up (to me, anyway) of tv, Virgin+ box, blu-ray player, fancy amp and surround sound speakers. Anyhoo, he spent the rest of the day fiddling around, swopping cables and ended up with the tv working through the aerial (rather than cable which we always use) and blu-ray player working through a different connection but weird set-up for sound and remotes. Virgin said there was a fault in the area but that didn't explain some of the other problems.
Went to bed - him still grumbling, of course - and then realised that the house alarm wasn't working. He then remembered that there'd been an almighty crack during that morning's thunder storm (I was out) which he'd presumed was thunder. He'd turned off the computers, luckily.
Alarm guy came yesterday and confirmed that we'd had a lightening strike! :o It damaged the alarm and obviously blew certain connections in the tv etc. Meanwhile, we saw scaffolding erected round the house opposite and saw that the top of their chimney was missing. They've now told us that the lightening blew their tv etc as well as damaging the chimney.
So, Virgin is sending an engineer Monday pm to see if the box itself is damaged and we need to take the tv etc to a repair shop; they'll assess the damage, confirm what's happened and then we can claim on the house insurance. Thank goodness it didn't get the computers - OH would have been in mourning! ;D

Bette,
Sorry to hear that but hope you get sorted soon. My telephone wire runs overhead and back in the day when we had dial up modems, they were always fried when we had thunder and lightening. Very expensive...........

That sounds scarey Bette!! A friend had the same thing happen to her but it blew all of the sockets out of the walls and ruined everything that was plugged in at the time - washing machine, dishwasher, ipod players, freezer, tv, dvd etc. Nothing was undamaged. Sounds as if you had a lucky escape in a way.
