Decapeptyl SR
AYoungShepherd:
I am 50 and have been diagnosed with a large uterine fibroid (the size of a 20 week foetus) and the gynaecologist has prescribed 4 x monthly injections of Decapeptyl prior to abdominal hysterectomy - uterus and ovaries - in October. I understand that the use of this drug will induce the menopause. Has anyone had experience of Decapeptyl for fibroids?
EAB:
Hi and welcome.
I personally don't have experience of this but my daughter has. She was given these injections to stop her periods due to severe endometriosis. She was only 19yrs at the time and was plummeted into menopause. 5 years down the line she was referred to a gyn specialist who was horrified that she hadn't been offered some form of HRT to alleviate her symptoms. She must have been miserable but bless her she didn't complain unlike me now who never stops complaining about my menopause!
I know this isn't the same reason you are having to get the injections but the result will be the same - menopause. I would speak to your consultant regarding the appropriateness of therapy to help your symptoms. You might find that your symptoms are mild and bearable.
Good luck

Welcome from me too.
Have you read the info on this site http://www.britishfibroidtrust.org.uk/faqs.php? There is a question about Decapeptyl if you scroll down which gives the fors and againsts.

Thanks to all who replied. I have looked at the British Fibroid Trust website and am encouraged.
