Hi Girls....
ive copied this thread about gold from how are you today as gold is something I do know about...
price of gold fluxuates daily.anyone considering selling their stuff should check the price and trend over a few days:-)
a month ago I bought gold at £11 a gram and sold it for £13, this weeks price I can sell for is only £10 so couldnt think of buying in at 11 now as trend is downward due to people cashing in. It will come up again an a month or so assuming there are no major disasters, terrorism etc.
As for the internet postal gold dealers be very aware !! I havent found one yet that pays what they say they will .... stick to high street "proper" jewellers witha public face. Try avoid the "cash for gold/contact for cash type shops.

Feeling very pleased with myself actually!  I sorted through my jewellery and took some gold and silver to a dealer today and came back with £600!! :)  There were some mis-shapen silver rings, a few silver chains, a few odd earrings (I always lose one!) a silver ingot and chain and a charm bracelet.  None of which I've worn for donkeys years.   I had a gold gate bracelet, a couple of gold chains, about 4 pairs of gold earrings and two of those T-bar things which used to be popular.   I thought if I got a couple of hundred I'd be pleased and I came back with loads more.

Best surprise was an old bracelet I bought in a box like a powder compact.  I bought it about 10 years ago at a fete and paid 50p or a pound.  We were going to a fancy dress party and I needed a load of "bling" for my outfit.  It looked like copper or brass and had little turquoise set into it and had no hallmarks.  Anyway, it's sat there for years and yesterday I was giving all the stuff a bit of a clean and I started rubbing at this and it started looking like gold.  I actually rather like it so decided I didn't want to sell that but took it along anyway and the guy sais it definitely is gold, probably 1920s and he would give me £125 for it.  I've brought that home and will certainly give it a thorough clean now.

It's funny, because I felt no emotional attachment to any of it, apart from that bracelet and my old wedding ring.  I have kept all my fave silver earrings, some rings and a few bracelets so I'm happy.

Oh please be careful with these gold 'dealers'! far better to take stuff to auction or to a proper goldsmith where you will get fair and proper price.  ANY one dealing with gold with have a test kit and will be able to tell you if it is GOLD  ::) or if you hand over diamonds these can be checked with a machine too.

What's today's gold and silver price?  A few months ago these 'buy gold' companies were being taken to Court by TS because they were weighing short measures  :-\

Wow PF what a brilliant result. I have nothing like that as I'm just not into jewellery. I don't even wear my wedding ring as it just irritates me. I have one pair of hoop earrings that I never take off (from Argos) and I do wear the odd cheap necklace now and then. My MIL said she was going to leave me a ruby ring and I asked her to think again as I'd rather she left it to someone who would appreciate it. She said if I didn't wear it she would come back and haunt me  :-\

Wish I did have some heirlooms in a way. There's no Cash In My Attic  :

He is a jeweller and has his own shop (even though I called him a dealer).  My friend wanted to sell some stuff a few weeks ago and took her bits  to 2 separate jewellers in another town and they offered her £250-£300.  This guy gave her over £500 for the same stuff, so I went on her recommendation.

I did read up on the internet about getting best prices and it said they should separate the various carats of gold before weighing.  Most of mine was 9ct but there was an 18 ct long chain and he put that aside without me mentioning it so I'm happy that he gave me a fair price.   Don't forget auctions always take a fair old chunk in commission too. ;)  He was also not at all pushy and didn't mind a bit that I was taking my "bragin find" bracelet home again.

Suzi Q:
I had my wedding ring valued at a Jewelers a few years ago here in Ozz
Its part welsh gold you could still buy them in certain places  on the Wirral
It cost in 1974 50 guineas which was a lot the average price was 18/25.00 pounds
It was valued here at over a $1000 600 pounds that was about 10 years ago
All my old clobbers willed away bummer hey!

Pennyfarthing:
I'm pleased you opened a new thread.

I was talking to DH about selling my stuff yesterday and we both agreed that anything is only worth what you can get for it at the time you want to sell it.  My late F-I-L had a beautiful Flemish court cupboard and was offered £12,000 for it in the early 80's.  They were fetching huge prices then.  He decided to hang on to it assuming it would increase in value.  It was eventually sent to auction when my M-I-L died about 8 years ago and it didn't even make £2,000.

Prices for all things fluctuate including gold but if you don't wear the stuff and have no emotional attachment to it then you might as well sell it I think.  Also fashions come and go and gold is really not that popular these days.  I much prefer buying very individual pieces from small silversmiths.

CLKD:
Please use the correct terminology  :'( - a dealer is different to a jeweller, I deal with both on a weekly basis.  Whilst I trust the dealer because we know the daily rise and fall of precious metals, I would take most to a jeweller, either to have melted and made into something I can wear or to trade in.

Glad you opened the thread.  People can get pulled into 'we offer cash for gold' without realising how involved Trading Standards have become  >:(

Pennyfarthing:
Morwenna - there are loads of sites and most of them have a calculator so you can weigh your gold and then calculate what they'll pay you.  That's if you fancy posting it off of course.  You can still get a rough guide of what your stuff is worth without using their service.

I went on personal recommendation to get what I hoped was a fair price.  I already said that my friend went to 2 other jewellers and was offered half the amount she eventually got.
