NHS Chronic Medication Service (Scotland)
« on: March 21, 2012, 11:36:16 AM »

Just picked up my latest package of repeat meds from chemist.  I have also just registered for the above.  The idea being that GPs will automatically issue prescriptions to chemists when you are about to run out of your meds without you having to put in a request.  It's being rolled out from the beginning of April, so I may not actually benefit for a few months yet.  Pharmacist will do periodic reviews, although main reviews will still be with your GP.
Pharmacist will also be able to discuss various aspects of your meds, like side effects.
A select few surgeries are just finishing the pilot scheme and it has proved very successful.
Time will tell.
May save the me hassle of arguing over whether or not I can continue with HRT.
However, I do wonder what we will be paying our GPs for eventually, apart from the obvious - diagnosis, referral.

Seems like a good idea CG.

OH was only moaning yesterday about his repeat prescription not being there for collection after he had requested it - it then means a trip to the main surgery where the pharmacy is if you are short of your meds.- or confusion over emails sent/received or not.

I will show him your post as this has happened several times and he is thinking of putting a complaint into the Practice Manager.

As long as your annual review is still with the GP can't see any harm.

What we do CG is call the pharmacist and tell her what we want and then two days later its there to be picked up.

OH would not be able to rely on GP to predict when he needs his insulin as it varies so this suits us well. One call and we are sorted. We have a great pharmacist, she makes sure over holiday periods that she has extra....just in case. Which is great if you are diabetic....otherwise we would have to go to A & E.

Sounds a great idea though....I really trust my pharmacist she is a fund of useful knowledge.

For the moment I will still have to email GP with my repeats.  My son cannot afford to miss out on his meds either HB, because like diabetes, he needs them on a daily basis. I hope new system works, but time will tell.
