curtains or blinds?

cubagirl:
Just a thought oldsheep.  Our original venetian blinds weren't fitted into the window recess.  They were fitted above the lintel with extended brackets fitted for our curtains.  So the blinds were bigger than the window.  Would this work for you?  They were apollo blinds, though not sure if that company still exists.

oldsheep:
thanks cubagirl. Think it may look a bit funny to do that. The siting of the window and the big steel lintel (to stop it collapsing!) are quite limiting. If the sun thing wasn't an issue, it would be easy.

honeybun:
A floaty voile that you can tie back. They have no weight and tie back really neatly. They will also let the sun in and not make the room look so bare.

We have those on the upstairs windows - got them last year and are pleased with them.  The guy who installed them says the easiest way to "dust" them is to do them while they're closed.  One side then the other. Sorted! :)  Much easier than trying to dust them whilst open.

oldsheep:
If you put up the smallest slatted venetian (our window drop is 1m30 so not big), how many cms does it pull up to, when pulled up fully, please?

Voiles would look nice, but we do need some light to be kept out unfortunately; the curtains are not just decorative although they don't need to be black out or anything

All this fussing about the window - the lock went and broke and jammed the window!
We are now wondering if we should put in/can afford a 1m x 1m skylight in our flat roof bit as it's a mezzanine and gets so hot as soon as the temp gets above 20. Is OH's home office space so he can't be a roast chicken when he roosts up there to work  ::) Got to find one that doesn't leak...velux say none of theirs are suitable for flat roof sections. Then will have to find that one a blind too!
