curtains or blinds?

Ladies, I have a question for you. We have a new window in our flat's lounge. There's only 10cm either side of it, and a 10-12cm steel lintel above it (it's right in the corner so needed a lot of support). A radiator is going to go below it in due course.
We're in a top flat. The eaves are wide, so although it's SE facing we only get sun when the sun is low from sept - march and then only through the very top of the sash window/s. I need my sun! So whatever we put up has to leave the whole sash window exposed to every possible ray of sunshine.

I was talking to an online curtain retailer about curtains and she says she thinks no curtain would pull back tight enough to leave the whole window exposed. Not even a double or triple pinch pleat in light material.
I assume she knows what she's talking about as we do have a curtain on a track (this one would have a pole) in the bedroom and it pulls back fine...it was a ready made and isn't that great, plus they don't do them that colour any longer.

Blinds are a problem too: roman blind when pulled up needs at least 20-30cm so no good as it would block my sun, unless we sited it about 30cm above the window, which would look plain daft.

Roller blind sited 15cm above the window would be ok, but how would a roller blind look in the lounge?! The mechanism and cords are not too pretty are they? We have one in the kitchen and I'd not want that in my lounge.

Whatever we choose, the fabric and height has to match the old window, which is the same sized sash (and has the same problem but has way more than 10cm either side so curtains are ok).

Otherwise I wondered if a single curtain - window is only 1m 03 wide - would work but with what heading to pull back tightly?

Hope this makes sense. If anyone has any ideas or opinions, please let me know. thanks x

Hi Oldsheep

A few of my neighbours plus m-in-law have vertical blinds.
They're good for letting light in and you can draw them back.
Depends if you like the look of them though  ???  :-\

I have roller blinds in my lounge. We got them from JL. We bought them from the shop floor because the sizes fitted the windows, but you can get them made to measure.  They have a lot of choice.

oldsheep:
I knew I should ask on here, thank you x

We had one of those blinds salesmen (nearly wrote blind salesmen - oh dear) come round and he said the pull up section would be much bigger, so v interesting that it may be possible.
I should go and look at JL and then see if the online people can do the same thing for cheaper. Their fabric is already 1/2 JL's price for the same stuff.
Has anyone got a name for the kind of tasteful lounge looking roller blind mechanism please? My kitchen one is white on a plastic cord and seriously ugly. OK for kitchen though. thank you!

littleminnie:
If you want JL to come out and measure, they charge £50. If you order the blind they knock it off the bill.
Just to give you an idea of price, we had a white wooden venetion made at JL for the bathroom and it cost £95.
