blood sugar
« on: February 02, 2012, 05:09:30 PM »

Hi,
I have found that while being on hrt. I have been on current one with ups and downs for just over a month I seem to have low blood sugar and feel far more hungry, if I don't eat I get even more anxious, headache, jittery and hyper, and end up feeling worse. Is this normal and does anyone else get this?

I've found that low blood sugar levels really exacerbate my meno symptoms, particularly anxiety. Now that I'm settled on HRT, it's less of an issue but I still have to be careful.
I go through periods when I get what I call "the munchies" and feel hungry more often. When that happens, I listen to my body and eat!  :P At other times, I'm careful not to wait too long between snacks and meals.
I do feel that somehow I've come to terms with the fact that I need to accept that I can't behave quite the same as before peri hit and that I need to be a bit more considerate of what's my body's going through.  :-\
Give it time, paisley, things will settle.  ;)  :foryou:

Have you had your blood sugar checked while you feel like this.

The only reason I ask is I get like this too. Jittery being the main thing for me. I mentioned this to my OH and he suggested I checked with his glucose monitor. (He is a diabetic). I waited until I was having a really bad jittery time and then I did a blood test. It was bog standard normal which blew my theory out of the water. I can only put mine down to hormone surges or tiredness.

I am not suggesting we are all the same and a snack still helps me although I have not got a clue why  ???

Might be worth checking though.

Hi Paisley,

Yes I definitely find this. Think we need to keep blood sugar on an even keel. My consultant has told me that fluctuations in blood sugar sends insulin into fluctuation which sends hormones into fluctuation. Hence feeling horrid.

Instead of eating often she has told me to eat four high protein meals a day and to cut out sugar. This helps keep blood sugars on a level.

This is quite tricky to do all the time!

Not sure I feel any better mind you!

Thinking of you and really hope things turn around for you.

Hi,
I know this sounds stupid but what sort of snacky things should we eat. Is it things like nuts. I sometimes take some oatcakes with me when I go out. Someone said bananas are worse for low blood sugar, is this true? What sort of foods are really good. Thanks

I find the nature valley crunchy oat bars are good, and they are delicious.
You get 2 in a pk and I take these to work and have one in the morning and one later.

I've always found bananas good but that's me personally. I always have cereal bars with me but am not convinced that they're "healthy" as such; I think the oats are meant to be good for blood sugar levels though.
When I was in the early days of HRT and still struggling with nausia (one of my horrible peri symptoms  :sick02:) and anxiety, I ate ginger biscuits which seemed good for both. At that stage, it was a case of getting something down me every couple of hours and it did work for me, the jitters were better when I did.

I have a banana mid-morning each day and it seems to help me. Not sure why really but makes me feel less wobbly.

Slow release foods such as bananas or porridge can be useful.  I carried packets of dextrose tablets for years, if my Blood sugar was really low they would fizz when I chewed them!  It's an awful feeling ain't it  :-\

I have to same feeling too if I don't eat anything regular and now make sure I eat every two hours usually banana othe fruit sometimes raisins and walnuts. I have also tested my blood sugar levels as my son is diabetic but yes you guessed it it's normal! I also notice I can't concentrate as well if I miss a snack. Does anyone else get this? I have been on HRT for 4 months and so far so good with no hiccups even with the northerstone, sometimes I do get the fuzzy head feeling especially with my period.

So that kind of begs the question.....if its not low blood sugar what is it that causes this feeling.

Eating may well make us feel better but why?

I have tested on quite a few occasions and I am always within a normal range. Of course not everyone has access to a glucose monitor so its difficult to tell.

I think this is a real mystery. We think its low blood sugar but its probably not. I have seen my OH "low" many times and its certainly not what any of us describe.  :-\

Low blood sugar! but not low enough because by the time we feel that lurch it's settled and won't show as low on a reading.  Go by how you feel.  It is definitely hormonal  >:( cause I had it every month for years before NAPS told me what it was and how to deal with it.  I carried bags of dried fruits and nuts with me for years++ so that I had something to nibble on *before* that awful lurch.

Hi thanks for your answers. I can't get on internet as much any more cos we live in Spain and hubby uses it for work all day. I have had my blood sugar checked and it was fine but I still get the jitters and hyperactivity if I don't eat regular

So remembering to eat before the jitters begins is important.  Grazing suits me  ;)
